Western
Hognose snakes are named for their upturned snouts that are
used to burrow throught the earth in search of toads, their
principal food. Easy to keep and handle, they are one of the
best snakes for the beginner. When disturbed, Hognose Snakes
may raise their head, huff and puff, flatten their necks and
make mock strikes. When frightened, they "play dead"
by flipping over onto their back, hanging out their tongue,
and holding perfectly still to fool a predator.
